Rhea conducted geotechnical analyses and foundation designs for the complete replacement of a bridge and culvert.
Clover Lane Bridge Replacement
Rhea was tasked with conducting geotechnical analyses, bridge foundation designs, and slope stabilization calculations for a bridge replacement in Lawrence County, Pennsylvania. The existing concrete arch culvert and bridge structure was deteriorating, with extensive slope stability issues along the culvert approach. A complete redesign and reconstruction of the bridge was necessary to create safe access for vehicular and pedestrian traffic.
Rhea first conducted a site reconnaissance survey and prepared a Subsurface Exploration Planning Submission report to identify all potential geological, hydrological, and historic hazards within the project site. Based on these investigations, Rhea was able to develop a geotechnical boring plan and laboratory testing plan to safely and accurately determine the subsurface conditions in the bridge area. Rhea then managed and oversaw the geotechnical drilling operations.
After drilling, Rhea assessed lab results and prepared a Structure Foundation Report with design recommendations for the culvert foundation and slope stability embankments. Since this project was completed, several other Pennsylvania Department of Transportation bridge projects have been awarded to Rhea.
