Acoustic Monitoring of Aircraft Traffic

At airports without air traffic control towers, sound-sensing monitoring equipment can be used to track airport traffic by detecting and counting the noises caused by takeoffs and landings. Rhea’s experienced technical specialists are applying this method at 12 regional airports in western Pennsylvania.

Rhea’s personnel are collecting acoustic counting data for eight one-week intervals at each airport: two nonconsecutive weeks per season, across one year. These data can be used to determine the number of aircraft operations during the recording period and estimate the overall seasonal and yearly traffic of each airport.

Rhea maintains a structured monitoring schedule and works closely with our clients to ensure that data collection goals are met, even in the face of unpredictable weather.
