When a regional airport needed to increase its capacity, Rhea provided stormwater designs and plans for erosion and pollution management for their new 1,001-foot runway extension.
Morgantown Runway Extension Stormwater Design
The Morgantown Municipal Airport is planning a 1,001-foot expansion of its runway, to accommodate larger aircraft and increase capacity. Rhea was tasked with stormwater designs for the runway site and its associated borrow-fill sites, and with preparing necessary regulatory documents, including the Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP) which covers both temporary erosion and sedimentation controls and long-term stormwater management controls and the Groundwater Protection Plan (GPP) which addresses potential sources of pollution at a construction site and how these sources will be managed.
Rhea’s design for the runway and borrow-fill sites include sedimentation ponds, outflow structures, vegetated water quality swales for roadway drainage, detention ponds, and phased implementation of erosion and sedimentation controls. Rhea also completed hydrologic, hydraulic, and structural analyses for culverts in runway and roadway embankments using HY8, Hydrology Studio, HydroCAD, and CANDE (Culvert Analysis and Design).
Rhea coordinated with local, state, and federal agencies, including the Morgantown Utility Board, West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Friends of Deckers Creek. Design and construction is ongoing.
