Rhea developed a green, low-impact stormwater management plan for a commercial plaza in Pittsburgh, reducing flood risk and benefitting both residents and businesses.
Public Plaza Low-Impact Stormwater Design
An underutilized public plaza in Pittsburgh is being redeveloped into a community asset, with more seating and green space, to benefit residents, businesses, and visitors to the area. Rhea was tasked with ensuring that the redesigned plaza included less impervious pavement than the original. When a paved surface is impervious to water, stormwater accumulates on top of the pavement, increasing flood risk and damage to the pavement. Rhea designed a low-impact stormwater system, including a system of inlets and piping, tree boxes, and infiltration within the planter spaces. Rhea’s detailed analysis of pre- and post-development conditions ensured an environmentally-friendly stormwater design in compliance with all local ordinances.
